Course Descriptions:
Disaster Services Overview is a basic level course that provides an introduction to Disaster Services at the American Red Cross. The course is divided into two modules. The first module introduces disaster preparedness and response at the American Red Cross and the second module is designed for chapters to customize with their local Disaster Services program information. The course engages participants through integrated video and interactive activities.
Shelter Operations is an instructor-led, basic level course designed to give participants an overview of the American Red Cross policies and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster. The course includes lecture and group exercises.
Client Casework is an activity within the Individual Client Services group. It provides direct assistance to individuals affected by man-made or natural disasters, ranging from single-family home incidents to larger events such as tornadoes, floods and hurricanes, and catastrophic incidents. Assistance can be issued in two forms: hard assistance and soft assistance. Examples of soft assistance include listening, providing information, advocacy, counseling and referral. Hard assistance includes mass sheltering, feeding and the bulk distribution of personal care items and cleaning materials, as well as emergency financial assistance to allow clients to purchase items needed immediately to begin their recovery.
Health Services Response is an instructor-led, basic level course designed to orient licensed health professionals to the roles and responsibilities of a Disaster Health Services volunteer when working on behalf of the American Red Cross to meet the disaster-related health needs of clients.
